As usual, we worked late last night. No kids and no pets waiting for attention and care. We once vacation sat a Poodle for friends for a couple of weeks and couldn't believe how much time it took, what with walking the dog, etc.

A friend has four dogs and two cats. He walks them a couple of times a day and he and his wife spend $100 a month on food. Who knows what they spend on vets, etc.

Let's see, $1,200 a year almost pays the insurance on two of our cars.

When you're in your 60s and don't have children or grandchildren to worry about, you don't have to be concerned that:

1. They are incapacitated in some way and dependent on you.
2. No one will be able to take care of your dependents when you become ill or die.
3. Someone is unemployed, unemployable, in jail or in some other kind of trouble.
4. The kids want your money, sooner than later, and they're fighting you and each other over it.
5. Your child is sick, won't take your advice and you can't help.
6. A child is in a bad marriage, won't get out or take your advice and you can't keep your nose out of it.
7. A child hates you or dislikes you for reasons you don't understand or consider unfair.
8. You screwed up as a parent, many times and in many ways.
9. You wasted $40,000 putting an ingrate through college.
10. Your sibling's kids are better than yours are.

Questions to ask about having kids:
1. Will I (we) be a good parent?
2. What is a good parent?
3. Do I want to work or parent?
4. Do I want to work and parent?
5. Will we be more selfish to have kids or to not have kids?
6. How much time do we have to decide?
7. Do we have a choice or want one?
8. Do we agree---hopefully before partnering?

The thought of living without having kids or pets is crushing to many couples, but millions of us are having great lives even though we weren't able to have kids or pets or decided we didn't want them. This blog will report on people who don't have kids and on those who are trying to decide to have them.
